The school-wide grading policy, kept here so it's one click from the Grading Hub instead of buried in a shared drive. Section headings match the original document.
The purpose of grades is to appropriately and consistently measure a student's mastery of defined standards, as well as knowledge and skills learned over a grading period or semester.
Green Hope High School follows the grading system established by the North Carolina State Board of Education, which includes letter grade scale, GPA calculations, quality point weights, and quarter and final exam weights.
Assessments designed to measure the cumulative learning and mastery of standards addressed within a unit โ tests, projects, essays, labs, performances, and the like.
Assessments designed to measure skill acquisition, content mastery, and/or conceptual understanding throughout the unit โ classwork, homework, quizzes, and the like.
Grades will reflect a student's learning and mastery of standards. Student grades will not be negatively impacted by non-academic or non-curricular variables (no name on the paper, wrong size paper, parent signature, and so on), except when specifically addressed in a rubric for a formal paper or project.
| Category | Honors & Academic | AP courses |
|---|---|---|
| Major assignments | 60% | 70% |
| Minor assignments | 40% | 30% |
Subject-area PLCs determine and communicate which assignments count as Major versus Minor, and align their assignment types for consistency.
Students are expected to complete all assignments on time and to the best of their ability. Late assignments are accepted up until the final summative assessment for that unit.
| Days late | Deduction from earned grade |
|---|---|
| 1 day | โ5 |
| 2 days | โ10 |
| 3 days | โ15 |
| 4 or more days | โ20 (maximum) |
After an absence, students should submit assignments the day they return.
Assignments completed fully outside the classroom, designed as reinforcement of learning โ skill practice, preparation, or review. Completion may be recorded in Infinite Campus but may not be calculated in a student's overall grade as a standalone assignment.
Assignments initiated during class time with instructor guidance. The instructor may require submission within the period or allow additional time outside class. Either way, the instructor may calculate it into the student's overall grade.
An additional assessment of learning offered to students who don't demonstrate mastery on the initial summative assessment.
| Course level | Mastery grade cap |
|---|---|
| Academic and Honors | 70% |
| AP | 60% |
In courses where Edgenuity is an option, students are offered objective recovery before mastery. Completing the Edgenuity tasks within the timeline replaces the initial summative grade with a 60%. Students may then still complete Mastery for 70%.
At the end of the first nine weeks of a semester, a student earning below 60% is assigned an Academic Recovery Plan. At the end of the semester the teacher revises the first-nine-weeks grade to 60% when both are met:
We are a community committed to integrity and excellence in academics and personal accountability. Cheating violates the WCPSS Code of Student Conduct and is addressed through the school discipline plan. Teachers may also assign an alternative assessment or activity.
